Edmonton Oilers look to fix whatever broke during the all-star break

After 16 straight wins, the
Edmonton Oilers certainly earned themselves a bit of a break

What they didn't count on was that some things actually break during the rush of NHL All-Star Weekend.

After going 11-0 in January in hockey's annual showcase, the Oilers fell just one win shy of tying the league record 17-game winning streak before a nine-day break in their schedule.

But coming off the other side of rest and relaxation, the winning streak wasn't all that went up in smoke, with a perfect 16-0 performance giving way to a 4-3-1 average.

But coming off the other side of rest and relaxation, the winning streak wasn't all that went up in smoke, going a perfect 16-0 to average 4-3-1.

And a penalty kill that was on a tremendous tear, 36 of 37 to prevent the opposing man advantage heading into the break, has since allowed 11 power play goals on 24 chances.

That's a 54.2 percent success rate, down from 97.3 percent, because their biggest strength has suddenly turned into their biggest weakness.

"When we came back from the break, I was asked a lot about momentum and things were going really well," Oilers head coach Chris Knoblauch said. "I think a lot of things didn't really affect him too much. I think the penalty kill, yeah. And I think Stewart (Skinner).

"During January, he was the best goalscorer and he goes out of his rhythm. He was playing very well and I think as a team we need to be a little more predictable in front of him. The possibilities we are giving up are often, very good. Clean it up, it's too easy for him to play his game."
